Iowa City Schools Implement AI Curriculum to Enhance Digital Literacy
Project Overview
Starting in the 2024–25 academic year, ICCSD has implemented a comprehensive AI curriculum tailored to various educational levels. For instance, students in grades K–2 are introduced to AI fundamentals, including discussions on the technology’s advantages and potential drawbacks. Older students engage in more in-depth explorations of AI, focusing on its safe and responsible use. This initiative aims to equip students with essential AI literacy, preparing them for a technology-driven future.
Key Features
• Age-Appropriate Curriculum: Introduces AI concepts progressively, ensuring relevance and comprehension across different grade levels.
• Ethical Considerations: Emphasizes the responsible use of AI, addressing ethical implications and promoting critical thinking.
• Teacher Support: Establishes an AI champion group comprising teacher representatives from each school, meeting monthly to discuss AI applications and implications in K–12 education.
• Policy Development: Involves a dedicated AI workgroup that includes students, administrators, support staff, and community members to draft comprehensive AI guidelines.
