Central Okanagan’s AI Recycling Pilot Reduces Contamination by 23%

Central Okanagan, British Columbia
Nov 27, 2023

Project Overview

This innovative solution employs artificial intelligence to detect non-recyclable materials in residential recycling bins. By utilizing truck-mounted cameras and AI-based visual recognition, the system identifies contaminants such as plastic bags, garbage, yard waste, and Styrofoam. When contaminants are detected, the system captures images and sends personalized feedback to residents, educating them on proper recycling practices. This approach aims to decrease contamination rates, thereby avoiding costly surcharges and improving the efficiency of recycling programs.

Key Features

• AI-Based Visual Recognition: Identifies non-recyclable items in real-time during collection. • Truck-Mounted Cameras: Captures images of contaminants as recycling is collected. • Personalized Resident Feedback: Sends postcards with images of contaminants and educational information to households. • Integration with Recycle Coach App: Provides notifications to users about contamination issues. • Privacy Protection: Blurs all image areas except the detected contaminant to ensure resident privacy.
